Longford's Saxon Brooch

Saxon Copper Alloy BroochThis photograph is of a Saxon Copper Alloy Brooch in the shape of a Stag.  This really is a beautiful object - it is about 5cmx4cm and dates to round about the 6th/7th Century.

One of the most interesting things about this brooch is that it was found in a pit lying on top of a piece of antler.  The pit was found south east of The Square during pre-construction archaeological excavation prior to the Twin Rivers Diversion as part of the construction of T5. The deposition of this brooch therefore seems a highly symbolic act - perhaps giving thanks for a successful hunt?
